Academic Curriculum - TOSA

All of the curriculum used to teach English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies are aligned to the California Common Core Standards and have been adopted at the district level. Art, Math, and PE lessons follow the California Standards in each of the respective content areas.

Sara Chalmers is our Instructional Coach. Mrs Chalmers is a former 5th grade teacher. For the past two years she has been offering her valuable expertise and support to our beloved teachers. Technically, she is a teacher on special assignment. She uses her teacher heart to help guide teachers in their use of best classroom practices in each of the content areas.

Our reading and writing curriculum in all grades is Witt and Wisdom. This was adopted by the Santa Barbara Unified School District during the 2023-2024 school year. FOSS Science was adopted during the 2018-2019 school year. FOSS ELD was adopted the the Spring of 2020. Additionally, our littlest Tigers learn their letter sounds using specific phonics curriculum.

What does TOSA mean, and what does the role do at Adams?

“TOSA literally means ‘Teacher On Special Assignment’. Coaching is a relatively new form of professional development that has the potential to be extremely powerful in transforming schools. ”

Note: Adams PTA has had a tradition of funding this position since the 2016-17 school year, however the position is now part of the district LCAP! It is fully funded by that source. We cannot wait to see how our school grows as a result of Sara's continued efforts!
