CALM CORNER
The Connection Between Nutrition and Mental Health in Children
What children eat plays a key role in their mental health and emotional well-being. A balanced diet with essential nutrients supports brain function, mood regulation, and energy levels. According to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats—such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins—can help improve focus, reduce anxiety, and stabilize mood. On the other hand, excessive sugar and processed foods have been linked to mood swings and difficulty concentrating.
Parents and schools can support children’s mental health by encouraging nutritious meals and snacks throughout the day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends starting the day with a healthy breakfast, staying hydrated, and incorporating nutrient-dense foods into meals. Teaching children about the connection between food and feelings can empower them to make healthier choices. By prioritizing good nutrition, we give kids the fuel they need to feel their best—both physically and emotionally.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH
February is Black History Month! It’s a great opportunity to celebrate and learn about the many inspiring and significant contributions of African Americans throughout history both in the classroom and at home.
Here’s a fun fact: Black History Month officially began in 1976, when President Gerald R. Ford asked Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history." Every year since then, every American president has dedicated February as African American History Month. Look for activities, resources and more fun facts about Black History on ParentSquare, social media and Thursday messages throughout February. And, if you have any ideas to share, please let us know.
