TOMORROW DRESS LIKE YOUR FAVORITE BOOK CHARACTER, FEBRUARY 28
Students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite book character on Friday, February 28 to help us close out the annual Reading Counts challenge. Please have your child bring the book that they plan to choose to be a character from, along with wearing a costume that represents that character on Friday. Costumes need to follow District-appropriate dress attire standards. No weapons or dangerous props will be permitted.
GOODBYE TO JANEY MADLANI
As of Friday, February 28, we will no longer have Janey Madlani working as our curriculum specialist supporting students in the area of reading. Janey has been working at Adams for seven school years. She has been a phenomenal support to students across all grade levels in the intervention space, specifically in reading. She has offered after-school tutoring, and after-school enrichment opportunities, including writing, arts, and math. She is extremely devoted to the Adams community and a very active member of our staff. Unfortunately, her work Visa has expired, and she is no longer eligible to work in the States. She has applied for a student visa and will be attending school starting this summer term, which will allow her to stay here in Santa Barbara with her high school aged son. We will be celebrating Janey on Friday from 4 to 6 pm at Santa Barbara Gift Baskets in Goleta if you would like to join us. We also will be giving her a going away gift, which will hopefully help cushion the impact of the loss of income over the next couple of weeks, until she finds herself with alternative forms of work. Janey is a gem! I know we will stay in touch with her in the community, but let's celebrate her as she leaves Adams as an employee. Please Venmo me @kelly-fresch by Friday at 10 am if you would like to contribute to a gift.
RESTAURANT NIGHT @ LUCKY PENNY
Join other Tiger families at Lucky Penny (127 Anacapa Street, Santa Barbara) on Thursday, March 13th from 4-9 pm and help support our school! 10% of total sales will be donated to our school (excluding deliveries). Lucky Penny has wood-fired pizzas, salads, small plates, and more to enjoy!
LOST AND FOUND
Please stop by the Lost and Found to pick up your items! We have many jackets, sweatshirts, water bottles and lunch boxes. All remaining items will be donated on the last day of school before spring break, Friday, March 21.

The Power of Positive Self-Talk: What’s Something You Like About Yourself?
Encouraging children to recognize and celebrate their strengths helps build confidence and supports their mental health. A simple question like, “What’s something you like about yourself?” can help children develop a habit of positive self-talk. According to the Child Mind Institute, positive self-talk—such as saying, “I am a good friend” or “I try my best”—boosts self-esteem and helps kids handle challenges with resilience. When children focus on what makes them special, they learn to appreciate their unique qualities and develop a more positive mindset.
Parents and teachers can nurture positive self-talk by modeling it in daily conversations. Praising effort rather than just results, encouraging kids to reframe negative thoughts, and promoting kindness toward themselves all strengthen emotional well-being. The American Psychological Association suggests that helping children practice affirmations, such as “I am capable” or “I can keep trying,” can reduce stress and improve self-confidence. By guiding children to recognize their strengths, we empower them to build a strong foundation for lifelong mental well-being.
