CALM CORNER

Can Routines Make Parenting a Little Easier?

At a glance, Family routines can be defined as any activity that your family regularly engages in that involves two or more family members. Family routines could include mealtimes, bedtimes, chores, activities of daily living (getting ready for school, bathing, brushing teeth, etc), or fun activities that happen in a regular and predictable way. The use of family routines are associated with the following benefits:

  • Increased resilience and self-regulation abilities

  • More advanced social-emotional development

  • Fewer behavioral problems

  • Improved school readiness and academic performance

  • Enhanced cognitive abilities (IQ)

  • Improved attention and time management skills as adults

A bedtime routine is perhaps the most important routine of all. Research finds that bedtime routines are associated with many positive sleep benefits, including:

  • Earlier bedtime

  • Increased sleep time

  • Less night awakenings

  • Improved parent sleep

  • Improved mood

  • Enhanced self-regulation and fewer behavioral problems

  • Reduced parent stress

See the below article for more detail with research-backed recommendations for parents/ caregivers.

REMINDERS FROM PREVIOUS THURSDAY MESSAGES:

PARKING LOT REMINDERS

PARKING LOT SPOTS ARE FOR ADAMS STAFF ONLY

Just a friendly reminder that both of our parking lots have spots designated for staff only. We have over 80 staff and fewer than 60 parking spots. There are two visitor spots in the upper lot, but other than that the only place for parents to park is in the Samarkand neighborhood or in the Earl Warren Parking lot. This is why we ask our kinder and TK families to park at Earl Warren and walk their students up safely. This is also the case for preschool families. Because preschool starts at 8 am some preschool families park in the lower lot and walk their child to class. But this is only of if they leave the lot before 8 am allowing staff to have access to their assigned spots. Keep an eye out for notices from Earl Warren Showgrounds as they may have conflicting dates. Thank you for understanding.

YOUTUBE

Santa Barbara Unified School District has been in the process of evaluating safeguards for our student devices that will help filter out irrelevant and harmful content on campus and at home. The YouTube app is categorized as a 17+ Social Media app. Because we cannot guarantee a safe and secure YouTube experience for our elementary students at this time, the YouTube app was removed from all student iPads on Friday, December 16. Students will continue to have access to YouTube through the browser on their student iPads for school related material. This is because our district content filters are more robust when using a web browser.
