CALM CORNER
Mindless Eating and Mental Health: Helping Kids Build Healthy Habits
Eating isn’t just about fueling our bodies—it’s also connected to our emotions and mental well-being. Mindless eating, or eating without paying attention, can lead to overeating, low energy, and mood swings in children. According to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, distractions like screens during meals can make kids less aware of when they are full, leading to unhealthy eating habits. Teaching children to slow down and enjoy their food helps them develop a positive relationship with eating and recognize how different foods affect their mood and energy.
Parents and teachers can encourage mindful eating by creating screen-free meal times and involving kids in choosing and preparing healthy foods. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends having regular family meals, as they support better eating habits and emotional connection. Encouraging children to listen to their bodies, chew slowly, and recognize feelings of hunger and fullness can improve both physical and mental well-being. By promoting mindful eating, we help kids develop lifelong habits that support their overall health and happiness.
