CALM CORNER
Growth Mindset and Mental Health: Helping Kids Embrace Challenges
Having a growth mindset—the belief that abilities can improve with effort—helps children build confidence and resilience. Instead of seeing mistakes as failures, kids with a growth mindset view them as opportunities to learn and grow. According to research from Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, children who develop a growth mindset are more likely to persist through challenges and feel less anxious about making mistakes. Encouraging phrases like “You’re still learning” or “Mistakes help your brain grow” can help kids develop a positive attitude toward learning and problem-solving.
Parents and teachers can support a growth mindset by praising effort rather than just results. The American Psychological Association (APA) suggests that when children learn to reframe setbacks as part of the learning process, they develop better coping skills and higher self-esteem. Encouraging kids to try new things, set small goals, and celebrate progress can boost their mental health and motivation. By fostering a growth mindset, we help children build resilience and confidence that will benefit them throughout their lives.
