NEW INFORMATION THIS WEEK

COLLEGE WEAR ON WEDNESDAYS

All across the District, staff and students are encouraged to wear College gear: shirts, sweatshirts, hats and such on Wednesdays. The positive energy surrounding high school students and their efforts to graduate and attend college after is something to be highlighted and encouraged. Every year in October and November students are making plans, submitting applications, writing essays, and focussing on passing their classes. We can join in supporting their journey by wearing college attire on Wednesdays all year.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS DONATIONS

We are seeking donations for each classroom to have on hand in the event of an emergency. If you would like to donate enough (nut free) energy bars or water bottles for your student’s class, please reach out to the teacher to communicate your desire. We only need one set per class. The number needed is different in each class, based on the number of students enrolled. Thank you for considering this important donation. During the last week of school the items will be shared with the students, so they do not go to waste.

STUDENT COUNCIL WEBSITE

Check out our new student council website where our student media technician, Liv Holdren,  will highlight the fun and exciting events going on at Adams. Adams Student Council Web site.

CHESS GAME BOARD PAINTING ON THE PLAYGROUND

We are looking for a parent volunteer, or two, who are willing to come and paint a lifesize chess game board on our playground. We already own the large game pieces, as we used to have it painted, but then the new sixth grade building was built. We purchased a new stencil and are ready to move the location to the playground, but need help painting it. If someone would like to donate their time we will provide the stencil and the paint. Please contact Ms. Fresch at kfresch@sbunified.org

FALL FESTIVAL AND OFRENDA

Thank you to everyone that joined in the fun at the Fall Festiva last night. More importantly, thank you to the many volunteers who helped put the evening together! It was well attended and a fun time for all. If you did not get a chance to check out the Ofrenda in room 30 please feel free to stop by and see it anytime. Just sign in at the office first. Thank you to Amba Coyt and her helpers for making it happen this year, even without a cafeteria. Mrs. Leo also supports this tradition with the addition of student art projects. All will remain on display through November 2.

CALM CORNER

What is grief?

As Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) approaches, this is a time where families remember their loved ones by putting up an altar with pictures and other things that they remember of their loved ones that have passed on. In the Latinx culture, this has been a way to praise and recognize those that have passed on for generations. This has allowed families to heal through their grief, but when we talk to our children about it, they may be confused about what it means when someone passes away. How do you process grief? How do you celebrate your loved ones that have passed? This handout is helpful when having those uncomfortable conversations with your children about grief and what it means when someone passes away.

REMINDERS FROM PREVIOUS THURSDAY MESSAGE

OCEAN GUARDIAN AMBASSADORS

Adams Elementary School is celebrating our 8th year as an Ocean Guardian School. Funding for the Ocean Guardian School comes from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This year, we will again offer the Ocean Guardian Ambassador after-school program. This will be open to all 4th-6th grade students at Adams Elementary that have an interest in the ocean, marine science, conservation, and stewardship that have not participated in a previous Ocean Guardian Ambassador program. These Ocean Guardian Ambassadors will meet approximately one Wednesday a month from November 2023-May 2024. This after-school program is FREE and will include many fun activities, such as kayaking, tide pooling, hiking, and a boat trip out to Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and National Park to conduct a stewardship project. The majority of the stewardship and conservation activities will occur offsite. For those activities that will take place at various locations, we will need parents to volunteer as adult chaperones and drivers for this group of Ambassadors. We will be able to accept 30 students total (4th-6th grade). Paper applications will go home with all 4th-6th grade students on Friday and completed applications will be due on Friday, November 3, 2024. Student selection will be based on a completed paper application and a weighted lottery.

CHAUCER’S GIFT CARD SALE

In addition to Chaucer’s Night on November 6th, Chaucer’s is offering gift cards with 25% of sales benefitting our school. Look for a gift card order form in Thursday folders this week. Forms and money must be returned to school by Thursday, November 2nd. They’re great for holiday or birthday gifts or give one to yourself and support our school at the same time!

HALLOWEEN, OCTOBER 31st

Plan ahead: on Tuesday, October 31st, students at Adams will be able to wear Halloween costumes to school. Students should look for costumes that are safe and appropriate for school. Students may not depict characters that are violent and can not carry props that are considered weapons. Students can not wear masks that cover their entire face. All students will be required to participate in a regular day of learning and exercise, so plan accordingly when selecting what to wear to school, including appropriate shoes. TK and Kinder students will have an opportunity to take a walk/parade around the students in grades 1-6 right at 8:30 am. If parents want to join us for this parade, you may meet us on the upper grade playground at 8:30 am.
